While the Collier County Athletic Conference meet was going on Saturday at Naples High School, it was safe to say that Naples was running away from the competition on its own track.

And it wasn't even close.

The Naples boys and girls track teams won the annual meet on Saturday, and the most shocking thing of all, is that the Golden Eagles were shorthanded.

"We had a pole vaulter that's on a field trip," Naples boys coach Bronze Bruland said.

"Two of our best throwers are hurt, and my best thrower didn't even mark at all in shot put," Naples girls coach Natalie Marker added.

Naples had 16 wins between the boys and girls Saturday afternoon.

Max Lombillo got things started for the Golden Eagles by winning the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 16.40.

"I've only been hurdling for two years, and this is the first time I'm taking home a first-place win," Lombillo said. "I'm really proud to be a part of this family."

Elijah Wright had an outstanding day for Naples, finishing in first place in the 100, 200, and 400.

"The thing about coaching is we get to look beyond the points," Bruland said. "The points don't talk about how much better he has become on the inside. His heart is what the other kids responded to tonight.

"Our team has not run better than a 3:30.00 in the 4x400 all year until tonight. He put it all out there for his teammates."

Two members of Naples' football program finished one-two in the discus, with Jett Su (50.89m) claiming first over MTSU signee Dorian Hinton (45.73m).

Morgan Palmer of Palmetto Ridge was the victor in the 3200 run, with a time of 11:39.81, a whole minute over the next best finisher. Naples' Jillian Dempsey was running with her step-for-step until lap six, when she turned off the track, which resulted in a DNF. Dempsey finished first in the 1,600 and was on the 4x800 relay.

"I was very excited," Palmer said. "I didn't know what would happen. I gave it my all, and felt pretty good about it."

In last year's CCAC meet, Palmer finished just short of Dempsey in the 3200, by 0.26 seconds.

In the final race of the evening, Barron Collier's Walker Brunner narrowly edged out Naples' Jason Deshommes on the final lap in the 4x400, putting the Cougars in second place, with 134 points. Gulf Coast finished third with 133 points.
