BACKWATER

March weather is in full character; gusty, unpredictable winds. Sudden storms. Changes in water temps 10 degrees overnight; now 69. No condition stability. Tides off full moon with velocity both ways. Water temp dipped in cool, windy conditions; scattered action on mega sheepshead; usually singular followed by runts. Best chance deep holes Marco River connecting waterways. Spec trout very active; many to slot. Best grass flats approach Johnson Bay creeks with shrimp under popper on drift. Black drum numerous; on deeper sheepshead spots on last half hour either tide with tipped jig head moved slowly. Snapper bite stays strong in unusual winter conditions; mangrove edges on shrimp.

NEARSHORE

As surface conditions ease. Work first reef structure; spot bait school; set chum and work tipped top water jigs over slick for mackerel, jacks, possible bluefish. Bottom action same venue for lane snapper; some sheepshead on shrimp, cut crabs.

OFFSHORE

Conditions permitting. Deep water crab trap markers holding nice tripletail surface, sunning. Double back quietly working tipped jig on surface. Red grouper bite stays strong. Need 50-55' hard bottom working live pinfish, cut ladyfish tight to bottom on drift. Note: release gag grouper; season closed.
