The Longhorns and the Burrowing Owls.

Using skill, experience, and cunning the Marco Island Burrowing Owls outlasted the younger, faster, and stronger Texas Longhorns during the first Marco/Texas Challenge Tournament.

The idea for the tournament was developed by Bill Millhouser, a Texan with a home on Marco Island, and Mike Wick, a Marco Island resident.

After months of planning the three day affair was held on Nov. 1-3 at the Marco Island Racquet Center.

The first day of the tournament found the teams tied at two apiece. The last two days saw the Burrowing Owls pull ahead before clinching the championship with a tally of 22-2.

The final score does not indicate the close matches and many tie-breakers. Following the tournament both teams met for the trophy presentation and lunch.
